Straight No Chaser…Clarins Double Serum Review!

Greetings and Salutations! This blog post is long overdue as I have mentioned this product in previous blogs a couple of times now and it deserves its own review! As always this comes from my own mouth, tried and tested on my own skin and purchased with my own money. Opinions are genuine and honest and have not been influenced by anyone other than me.

It’s like a Genie in a Bottle and I have been excited about it from day one. Clarins Double Serum is something to be excited about. In fact, you can get ‘Tom Cruise jumping on Oprah’s couch’ excited. It is that good! I have always followed very easy regimes when it comes to skin care. This is not to say that I don’t take it seriously but more so to say, I stick to the 3 steps of cleanse, tone and moisturise. Throwing in a serum was a little out of my comfort zone previously as I really couldn’t see the benefit of putting loads of products on my face. With this Serum, I see no harm in adding one more product to my still very simple regime.

So what exactly is a serum? Do you really need one? Is my moisturiser not enough? Hopefully by the end of this review you will be able to answer those questions and more. I know I have said it before but it really is down to preference what you put on your skin. You always need to think about what your skin really needs to be able to decide what is best for you.

Clarins Double Serum Double Serum pic 2

Let’s start with the basics!

A serum is a formula or concentrate (more often than not liquid/ gel) that goes deeper into the layers of the skin to nourish, hydrate, rejuvenate and even prevent ageing. There are several types of serums on the market. You would normally use a serum after you cleanse and tone and before you moisturise.

Whether you need one or not is down to you. Please don’t go rushing off to the nearest department store to go find any serum you can. I would try to avoid the temptation to order one online so that you have it in time for your bedtime facial tomorrow. If your moisturiser or current skin care products are doing what you need them to, there is no need to add a serum. If you feel that your skin could seriously benefit from a product that tackles a specific issue such as hydration, for example, then maybe it is something to consider. All in all, start with a trial size serum where possible and see how your skin reacts. Moisturisers do not break down as much as serums do and most do not provide the nutrients of a serum. Science part over!

This is what Clarins say about it. “Double Serum is the only age- control treatment to revitalise the 5 vital functions crucial to youthfully radiant skin. Hydration, Protection, Regeneration, Oxygenation and Nutrition. Using Lipidic and Hydric formulas to replicate the model of the skins hydrolipidic film and dual oil-water nature of the skins cells.”

Find out more about Clarins and their values and philosophy here.

Why I love this Serum!

I have dry skin and my face in particular seems to crave more than my moisturiser gives. I have tried a couple serums in the past that have just made my face shine on the surface like I have used a whole tub of vaseline on it. Others appeared to have no real effect on my skin apart from making it sting or dry out even more. I watched a couple of video reviews about others who had tried the Double Serum and I tried a sample. Instantly my skin looked vibrant and fresh. It felt like I had nothing on my face. It was light and refreshing and you could tell it was not ‘sitting’ on the skin.

During my visit to my local Debenhams, Kirsty the Skin Care Specialist (who is now my Clarins Skin Care everything) took time to look at my skin in detail and discuss the pros of this product. There was no hard sell or push to buy it or any product but instead an opportunity to try it and decide for myself. That is one of the reasons I am so impressed by Clarins. I love when the product knowledge is there and when you are left to make a decision and it is not rammed down your throat. That was back at the beginning of February and I have been using it ever since.

Beauty Holder Roundup!

Price: 3.5/ 5

At £55.00 in the UK it is the pretty pricey. It is a huge stretch even for my beauty budget- yes, I have one! Do I think it is worth it? Yes. I would happily forgo buying some foundations for this product. With what it has done for my skin so far- I don’t need the foundation. A little does go a very long way as I will tell you below. For that reason it gets a decent score. Clarins is also synonymous with premier skin care and a high end brand so I knew it would be a pretty penny!

Packaging: 4.5/ 5

Plastic bottle like container that should be fully recyclable. That always gets a thumbs up. The clear bottle allows you to see the 2 separate chambers of the ‘lipidic‘ and ‘hydric‘ formula. Pump applicator that dispenses equal parts of both that you mix together to activate before applying to face. It contains 30ml or 1FL OZ so handbag and travel friendly. I was able to use to the last pump but could see some at the bottom that I could not get. This is my only gripe with the packaging. There is very little left over- talking a drop if that. I may wrestle with the bottle next time.

Product: 5/5:

You only need to have read up to this point to know I really love this serum. As serums go this one does everything it says it can. All skin types will benefit from this product. It smells delicious and as with all Clarins products it is plant based and natural. Non-greasy and light, it is not sticky and does not irritate the skin. The natural nutrients the Double Serum is putting inside my skin show on the outside. The effects on my skin are not just noticable by me but others. Any fine lines due to dehydration have disappeared and I appreciate they were very fine lines to begin with. There is a natural glow to the skin that lasts throughout the day whereas previously with only my moisturiser, my skin would not appear as supple halfway through the day. I am getting older now and so the skin needs a little more love and magic! It is not so much about the youthful look of the skin that this product gives but the nourishment, the prevention and of course the hydration.

I would honest say that you only need between one to 2 pumps (or 1 1/2) in the morning at night. Anything more than that is a waste. I only use one and that is enough for my face and neck. This serum has given my skin what it was lacking and means that I do not loads of different products for different issues but one that can do it all. My skin care regime is just as easy breezy as before, my skin just has a new ally- Double Serum!

Thank you for taking the time to read this. I hope this post was useful to you in some way. Get in touch and let me know if you use a serum or if you have tried this one. You may not need one at all- remember that is down to you to decide!

Until next time!

I’m going Natural… (Introductory Hair blog post)!

I am on a hair journey. I don’t know the frequency of these posts at the moment it is all new and I am doing my research!

Going natural in the simplest of terms means I have stopped applying a relaxer to straighten/ perm my hair. The part that has been chemically processed will remain straight and any new growth will be curly, wavy or even kinky according to my natural pattern. I am already in a transition stage of not using a relaxer and have been ‘relaxer-free’ for over a year.

My award winning celebrity stylist and friend Korell Williams (@cut2williams) of Zig Zag Salon in Oxford Street is supporting me with this change. The first question I normally get is why? Some quick answers below!

  1. I decided to go natural because I love colour more than the straight texture. I did not want to damage my hair any further through relaxing and colouring. I also am championing a lifestyle change for myself. Healthy hair, skin, lifestyle…
  2. Tired of the damage and breakage to hairline and nape- actually all my hair due to chemical treatments, constant heat and more.
  3. I will not be doing the ‘big chop’ at this stage. That is where you cut your hair to the new growth only getting rid of the perm processed hair. I did a mini chop  a couple weeks ago where we took off a few inches. I went from bust level hair to bob length- just on my shoulders. (It was emotional- I think I cried- a little)!
  4. When I refer to perm- that is not the curly perm. It is another term for relaxer.
  5. I can achieve length and thickness with my own hair and not only with extensions, wigs or weaves. That being said- I will still be rocking them for different looks and during this transition.

Natural hair me- I am loving buns at the moment!

Natural hair...

I have to shout out my dear friend Naomi Clarke on this post. Years and years ago when we were partners in crime my hair fell out after I coloured and dyed it within a 24 hour period. I had a short afro (really short) from shoulder length hair. Naomi being the ace that she is cut off all her hair to support me as I was devastated. That is what you call friendship! Naomi is a Skin Care, Natural Hair care specialist and Loctitian. For more information go to www.naosheas.co.uk  | Look out for a guest blog spotlight on Naomi and Korell in the coming months.

That my friends is it in a nutshell. More to come.

Joker Inspired Make-up look…

Why so serious? Have fun with your make-up…you know you want to!

With my bright red hair you would think I would be restricted with make-up options! Think again. I remember in a very early post saying there are no rules with make-up and that is what I remind myself often. I do try where possible to use complimentary colours and more importantly make sure that the look is one I am comfortable with.

I am sure when people see me walking down the street with red hair, hot pink lips and green smokey eyes comparisons to ‘Ronald Mc Donald’ come to mind- especially when I wear stripes. Joking. Or am I? Yes…I am! I couldn’t possibly be restricted when I am having so much fun.

My current obsession is green anything so I try and incorporate it in my looks. I had Batman on the brain yesterday and so this look was inspired by that. Hope you enjoy. Details below.

You look may come out different according to your eye shape. I have hooded lids! What’s that you ask? Click here to find out more.

Here are the pics!

Purple/ Green look close-up Look with nude lips

On my face:

MAC Conceal and Correct Palette in Dark. Under eyes on on the lid. Also used as brow tidy. No foundation in this look as my skin is taking a break.

Brows/ Eyes:

Strut eyebrow pencil (MAC). This is a reddish brown colour. In previous posts the one I have used is called Spiked. All shadows are by MAC for this look. Arena as highlight. Texture as blending transition colour. Green colour is called Humid. This was used to set the green eyeliner pencil in the water and lower lash line called Minted. Purple shadow is called Spoiled Rich (from the Archie collection). I used a NYX Jumbo pencil Purple Velvet as the base. Eyelure lashes 145.

Blush/ Highlight:

NARS Dolce Vita and Albatross- gorgeous gold highlight.

Lips:

NARS Como (nude pink) NYX African Violet

African Queen Hot Pink lips

Spring Forward! Clean up your (Make-up) act…

Although here in London it is snowing (yes, it is as I type this) my clocks remind me that British Summer time began on Sunday when the clocks went forward. With this comes the bright early mornings, albeit chilly it is a great time to clean up our make-up!

Clean up your make-up!

I had a discussion with a friend a couple weeks ago about a lipstick/ gloss that I am sure she has had since we were into glossy lips- believe me that was about 10 years ago! She seemed a little disappointed when I broke the news to her that make-up and beauty products have a shelf life! I can only imagine the ‘sighs’ and ‘gasps’ as you read this. They will no doubt be followed up with ‘do you know how much this cost me’ comments and the like. Believe you me, I shed tears (real ones) when I have to clean out my make-up especially when it is something I have used once or twice. Seems impractical but your skin will thank you in the long run.

That build up of bacteria and dirt that you don’t see only gains more momentum when we keep products past their date. I mean you wouldn’t drink milk past it’s use by date right? Exactly my point. Although most make-up and beauty products do not have expiration dates on them, they do have a lifespan. Below is a rough guide for some of your fave products! Cue the tears…

  • Mascara: 3- 4 months
  • Foundation: 6-12 months (Oil based foundations you may be able to stretch to 18 months)
  • Cleanser: 12 months
  • Concealer: 12 months
  • Lipstick: 12- 18 months (there goes my whole collection- just kidding)
  • Eyeliner/ Lipliner: 18-36 months (sharpen and clean regularly or after each use)
  • Powders (including blush and eyeshadow): 2 years *Now some say this can be stretched to 3 years. I would advise that powders are sanitised after use for maximum protection, if you want to keep them*
  • Nail Varnish: 2 years

There are some great products on the market for sanitising/ cleaning your make-up. One of my favourites is Beauty So Clean. Find out more about them here!

Beauty Holder, Beauty Tips!

  1. Once you open a product the countdown begins! Make a note on it when you started using it so you know when time is up!
  2. Don’t share products if you can help it. Especially mascara’s and lipliners. Use disposable wands if you can to avoid cross contamination and infection. Even with disposable wands or brushes, wipe them off before double dipping back into the product.
  3. If you’re gonna invest in pricey make-up…USE IT! Don’t waste your money by leaving it in a drawer to gather dust only to have to throw it out after using it once as it is past it’s date.
  4. Check the ingredients. Some organic and natural products may have a shorter shelf life.
  5. Look for expiration dates on products. Some have them.
  6. Wipe/ sanitise/ sharpen/ clean products after use.
  7. Keep your tools clean. Brushes especially! You can give them a quick wipe after use and then do a deep clean at least once a week or every fortnight. If using on other people this will be more frequent. I deep clean brushes all the time because of frequent use on clients. If done correctly brushes can last a couple of years or longer. My brush post tells you more.
  8. Be vigilant. Smells and colour-changes are a sign, things may not be right!
  9. Always shake liquid products before use.
  10. Don’t become too attached. When it is time to say goodbye, that favourite lipstick you wore to your high school graduation years ago will talk you into keeping it for nostalgia. Give it a kiss and chuck up the deuces! Bye lipstick! Mwah!

I’m off to throw out the lipstick from point 10…only joking, I didn’t wear lipstick to my graduation! It was all about the hair then! :)

Hope you enjoyed this post! Let me know how you get on!

Bollywood Party Inspired look…

I received a request from a follower named Michelle. She wanted a simple Bollywood party look that was not to be too difficult for a make-up beginner.

Indian Make-up looks are beautiful in a powerful, colourful way. This look is not a Indian Bridal look and in my bridal inspired looks series starting this month, we will cover an inspired look for an Asian Bride.

So here are the pics…

Nude lips/ natural daylight...Nude lips, eyes closed...

Same look but inside with red lips… (the weather changed up)…

Red lips...inside

If like me you have hooded eyes, you may want to read my blog post for tips on make-up application here.

When my eyes are fully open it is hard to see the colour on the lid unless I take it higher. For this reason I didn’t add any eyeliner.

On my face:

Maybelline Fit Me Foundation in 355/ MAC Conceal and Correct Palette in Dark (brow clean up and under eyes)

Brows/ Eyes:

MAC Spiked Brow Pencil/ NYX Jumbo Pencil in Rust / MAC eyeshadows in Cranberry (lid) Strike a Pose (Turquoise- bottom lashline), Arena (highlight) and Texture as blending colour/ Eyelure lashes 145

Holding back the years…beauty that can age you!

I remember at 16 wanting to look 18 or maybe even 21. I was clueless about make-up back then but had some friends who with the swipe of a make-up brush or lipstick managed to achieve the coveted ‘grown and sexy’ look. You only have to look around nowadays to see young girls wearing a full face of make-up to realise not much has changed.

There is an art to looking older without looking aged. No matter what age you are some of your beauty habits/ regimes may be adding years on you. Here are a few Beauty Holder, Beauty Tips to help you stay age-gorgeous!

  1. Cake is not for your face! One of the most common ageing make-up mistakes is wearing too much! Whether it is foundation, concealer (more on that in a sec) blush and more. Plastering your face will make you look older and not necessarily in the best and most flattering way. Letting your skin shine through and breathe is important. Consider using a light to medium coverage foundation or tinted moisturiser. If you feel you must have full coverage make-up try and sheer it out with a touch of foundation or use a buffing brush to make sure it is blended into the skin properly.
  2. To conceal or not conceal? Dark circles, spots blemishes are the bane of many of our lives. Instant reaction is to run and hide or cover them like your life depends on it. This only takes us back to point number one. The more concealer you apply will only enhance the issue. It is important to try and correct or counteract the issue before adding concealer. Example: Use an orange/ salmon colour corrector to cancel the darkness under the eyes and then use a concealer. This is especially good if the darkness is blue like or purple in colour.  Ensure the concealer is well blended as the more you apply the more it will settle into any fine lines or wrinkles. Also set with a fine translucent powder.
  3. Powder baby! Do you really need to powder your whole face 10 times? If you have dry skin, you should refrain from setting powder unless you really need it. Applying various layers of powder is a no-no. See point number 1. For my oily skin beauties, try working with a primer to mattify the skin first and set with a thin layer of powder. Oil blotting sheets are also a very good investment.
  4. One dimension! Monotone or flat looks can make you look washed out which also make you look older. Wake up those beautiful features with some colour. Whether on your eyes, cheeks or lips. Feeling adventurous? Contour your cheekbones and add a highlight. Creating shadows (contouring) and highlighting (high points of the face) allow more depth to your overall look!
  5. Look after your skin! I know I preach this a lot. You only have to look back at several of my posts to see skin care is important. If your skin is not looked after it will start to dehydrate and lack the natural moisture and elastin it needs to look refreshed. Any make-up you add on top of that will then get sucked up by the skin and age you. Haven’t started a regime yet? Check out my previous post on some tips to help you begin. Cleanse! Tone! Moisturise! Let’s shout it together.
  6. Wear colours that compliment your natural tone. Making sure that your foundation is the right match (even if you have to blend more than one shade) is important. It is just as important as wearing the right tone of red lipstick. Try out shades and tones to find the right ones for you.

I’m tempted to go against all of the advice above and take photographic evidence for you so you can see what I mean, I then thought you wouldn’t want me to do that to myself….right? :)

How about one with me following all the advice above?

It’s all in the Motives…

Mini haul post…

Motives Cosmetics is an American brand by Loren Ridinger. Their objectives seem simple, to make affordable quality make-up for women of all ages and skin tones. They also have a skin-care range that not only has products for the outside but for the inside too (their ‘Ultimate Aloe’ drink is great). When a company is delivering a triple threat like this I am always excited to try it and get involved.

For many of my clients, make-up quality is paramount but it goes hand in hand with price, reputation and more. It can be a little overwhelming looking for the right products for you when there is so much competition on the market. If you’ve read any of my make-up posts before, you know that I am passionate about any tone/ complexion being able to find makeup for them- especially foundation. Whether you have the fairest of skin or a gorgeous darker tone, you should have no trouble finding a variety of cosmetics that enhance and compliment you.

I remember a photo I saw of LaLa Anthony in a fierce hot pink lipstick over a year ago and that caught my attention. It was by Motives, for which she has her own collection- Motives for LaLa.

I was lucky enough to be invited to an intimate Motives Collection Preview last week. The preview showcased their Top 10 products and also some of their huge product range. Several members of the amazing Motives UK team (Tanesha, Gavin and Roxy) as well as a fabulous trainer from the US (Lisa) talked to us about the brand and it’s values. We had demonstrations on how easy the products and tools are to use (even for non- make-up artists) and what they have in the pipeline. The brand has been in the UK for a little over a year now and is doing big things. Not all of the range is available in the UK. I would advise that you check out the American site also especially for some of the foundations. For all my UK followers and friends who are interested in products, get in touch with me.

A great chilled out evening, without the hard pressure sell. It was interactive, informative and engaging. I’ve tried some of their lipsticks and eyeshadows before and have been pretty impressed. You will definitely see more from Motives in blog posts and make-up looks to come.

With my lipstick obsession which you all know about, I order some new products. Ordered Thursday and came on Saturday.

Pigmented, vibrant and flattering shades of lipstick gorgeousness are below as well as a blush :)

Swatches are in order of pics!

Box FreshLipgloss is poppin'...It is all in the name...
